2010 Methane to Markets Coal Mine Subcommittee Meeting in Beijing

On October 21st, the Methane to Markets Coal Mine Subcommittee met in Landmark Hotel, Beijing. Dr. Huang Shengchu, President of CCII was present at the meeting as subcommittee co-chair and delivered opening statement. The meeting was held by USEPA and CCII, and representatives from more than 12 countries including Australia, Germany, UK, India, Mongolia, etc, joint the meeting.
The meeting updated the outcomes from the Partnership Steering Committee meeting and Ministerial Meeting held on October 1st in Mexico, and had a discussion on some key issues. Ministerial delegation of the Mexico Meeting announced a new Global Methane Initiative(GMI), urging stronger international action to address near-term climate change and methane emission. GMI will build on the existing structure and success of the Methane to Markets Partnership, while enhancing and expanding its efforts and encouraging new financial commitments from developed country partners. The scope of methane sources of GMI will be expanded, and wastewater section will be included. The United States is pledging $50 million over the next five years to GMI to support the implementation of methane emissions reduction projects and technologies.GMI also will focus on the development of methane national action plan that will help countries to identify the priority in methane emission.
Representatives of the meeting updated the new progresses of Methane to Markets in coal sectors in their countries. Mr. Liu Wenge, director of the Energy and Safety Division of CCII, gave a presentation on the progresses in China, and briefly introduced the situation of CBM/CMM recovery and utilization and the outcomes in China. Discussions were conducted on the role of methane abatement, the technological challenges in commercial development of CMM, the development of country-specific action plans and the leadership roles in the Subcommittee, etc. The meeting also had a planning for the next Subcommittee meeting and other events.

Mr. Liu Wenge, Diretor of Energy and Safety Division of CCII, made a presentation with the title of Current Situation of CBM/CMM Recovery and Utilization and Preferential Polices in China.
